The Swiss INVENT team has recently completed the analysis of Twitter posts related to “culture” in Switzerland. The final sample consists of more than 80’000 tweets in four different languages, posted in 2019 and 2020. Preliminary results show that culture is interpreted in various ways in the Swiss Twittersphere. On the one hand, many tweets refer to different forms of art as manifestations of culture. On the other hand, culture also refers to a variety of topics such as technology, business, sports, politics, or social inequality. These results therefore support the notion that culture is a multifaceted concept that can mean different things to different people. Moreover, it was found that discourses about culture are fairly stable over the two years studied, although newly emerging topics like COVID19 get enmeshed with existing discourses. Together with the results of the other INVENT countries, this kind of Twitter analysis helps to develop suggestions for effective cultural policies in Europe.
